Drag Queen Storytime - July

The Pearl is very excited to present Drag Queen Storytime, an event designed to encourage early literacy and challenge gender stereotypes!

Drag queens perform and read stories to kids in a theatrical setting, every first Sunday, beginning this February!

Broaden your kids horizons (and your own) by bringing them to a event at which they can get to know people who defy rigid gender restrictions with glamour, humor, and confidence.

This series is recommended for the whole family, and particularly for those with children from birth to fifth grade.

DQS is facilitated by The Pearl, in cooperation with educator and activist Wick Thomas, and will feature a rotating cast of professional drag queens from the Kansas City Area.

Feel free to dress up in your most fantastic princess, prince, Prince, animal, or any other costume that makes you feel fantastic!

Admission is $10/adult and $5/child. All of the money goes to support the featured artists and The Pearl.

Our intention is to capture the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and to give children positive, and unabashedly queer role models while encouraging literacy and exploration of the theatrical arts.

See you there!

Seven and Ten

After 2 years of work, and some time away Prisca Jebet Kendagor is happy to make her playwriting return to Kansas City with the Readers Theatre Performance of "Seven and Ten."

Plot:
When Sarah was 14 she had a dream that God told her she and Ryan were supposed to be married. Being a God fearing man (at least as much of a man as you can be at age 14) Ryan agreed and they began courting. At 18 they were married. Once in seminary their friend Henry met Jenny. Henry liked Jenny a lot, and she felt the same. After a lot of prayer and counseling from Ryan and Sarah, Henry and Jenny got married right after college. Ryan becomes a youth pastor, Henry becomes a worship pastor, and Jenny becomes a missions’ pastor. All at the same church. Life is simple and perfect...according to Sarah. After years of making choices at such a young age, Ryan and Jenny begin questioning everything, including whether or not they married the right people. Feeling her husband drift away, but not sure why Sara tries desperately to keep things in control. Praying more, and pretending everything is fine.Things begin to fall apart below the surface, but above everything thrives. So it’s ok right? That’s part of being involved in ministries. Your life falls apart, but as long as you change the world, it’s all fine. As the veils become more and more torn and tattered, and true selves come to the surface, even Sara herself is revealed to have her own shameful secrets and hatreds. Especially for Jenny.

Directed by Bob Linebarger
Cast:
SARAH- Emma Carter
RYAN- Davis Derock
JENNY- Shawna Pena Downing
HENERY- Joshua Gleeson
